JACL Presenter at Multicultural Conference
'Unity and Its Many Branches'
San
Jose, CA - San Jose JACL (www.sanjosejacl.org) has signed on to
present a cross-cultural communication workshop entitled "Understanding
Cultural Traditions and Norms from Japanese American Perspectives"
at the 5th Annual Multicultural Conference - 'Unity and Its Many
Branches' on September 9th, 2003 at Santa Clara University. Workshop
presenters Lisa Sueki, Ph.D., Kenzo Kimura and team members Noriko
Kumoi-Ray, Gail Sueki, and Mayumi Stroy will conduct an informative
and interactive workshop that explores cross-cultural communication
from Japanese American perspectives, and will increase workshop
participants' understanding and awareness of underlying cultural
values and communication styles.
This
one day professional conference, sponsored by Resources for Families
and Communities in Santa Clara County (RFC), a nonprofit agency
specializing in community development and family support, will include
workshops focusing on professional growth by exploring issues of
communication and cultural proficiency. There will be a total of
five branches consisting of Cross Cultural, Human Rights, Immigration/Resettlement
(new), Public Policy (new) and Spirituality.
"The
Multicultural Conference continues our commitment to promote unity
through respect for multiculturalism," according to RFC Executive
Director, Jesús L. Orosco. "By providing educational
workshops to foster cultural understanding and acceptance,"
Orosco says, "we hope to encourage constructive discussion
between people of differing cultural backgrounds or opposing socio-political
views. Opening the mind and embracing foreign beliefs is the platform
that can help nurture harmony in our troubled society."
This year, the conference is expected to draw over 400 participants
representing professionals, students, and community leaders. RFC
will be providing continuing education units (CEU's) through Santa
Clara University for social workers and educators.
